Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started at Gold Swim School

  • What can my child expect to learn at Gold Swim School?

At Gold Swim School, safety comes first. We teach the swim-float-swim method: children learn to float independently before advancing to strokes. As swimmers progress, they earn ribbons to celebrate achievements. Once your child has earned all 10 ribbons, they may be ready to join our associated swim team, Chattahoochee Gold. Our staff will coordinate an evaluation during your lesson time when your child is ready for team.

  • What is the evaluation process and how often is my child evaluated?

Your child’s instructor and Site Supervisor evaluates progress every class, and the Lesson Director monitors overall growth regularly. This ensures each swimmer is progressing safely and confidently.

  • What should my child wear to lessons?

    Required gear includes:

    Swimsuit

    Goggles (strongly recommended)

Swim diaper (for children aged 4 and under)

    Two towels

    A dry change of clothes

Optional: Swim cap. Please label all items and leave jewelry at home.

  • What are your arrival, pickup, and viewing policies?

Arrive 5 minutes early for check-in and prep. Parents may observe from designated seating, but we ask that you do not interfere with instruction. Pick up promptly after class on the pool deck as we would love to discuss your swimmer’s progress.

Lesson Levels & Progress

  • What is the right lesson group for my child?

We group swimmers by age and ability:

Parent-Tot (6 months–3 years): Foundational comfort, songs, and safety.

Pre-Levels (3-5 years): Floating, gliding, water confidence → Kicking, breathing, basic strokes→Stroke technique, endurance, dives.

Pro-Levels (6-10+ years): Floating, gliding, water confidence → Kicking, breathing, basic strokes→Stroke technique, endurance, dives.

Please note that as the swimmer gets older, we expect more from their technique— we hold them to a higher standard.

  • Will my child’s placement ever change?

Yes — placement is flexible. As swimmers show readiness, we’ll move them to higher levels to continue steady progress.

  • What is the role of the Lesson Director?

The Lesson Director ensures curriculum consistency, trains instructors, and monitors student development.

  • What is the role of the Site Supervisor?

The Site Supervisor handles daily operations, checks off skills, assists instructors, and helps parents with on-site questions.

  • What happens if my child is afraid of the water?

This is very common! Our instructors are trained to help fearful swimmers build trust gradually using positive reinforcement, comfort techniques, and fun activities.

  • What if my child is placed in the wrong level?

At Gold Swim School, we carefully place swimmers based on age, ability, and skill assessment. However, if you feel your child’s level isn’t the best fit:

Communicate with the Lesson Director right away. They’ll observe your swimmer and determine if a level adjustment is needed.

Level changes are made thoughtfully, ensuring your child is challenged but not overwhelmed, and that they continue progressing safely.

No worries if a switch is needed — our goal is a positive, confidence-building experience for every swimmer.

  • What happens when my child earns all 10 ribbons?

When a child achieves all 10 ribbons, they’re ready for the next step — our associated Gold Swim Team. Our team will guide you through the transition process. Our staff will coordinate an evaluation during your lesson time when your child is ready for team.

Our staff will coordinate an evaluation during your lesson time when your child is ready for team— it could be before they get ribbon 10 depending on what you are looking for.

Attendance, Scheduling & Policies

  • Do you offer make-ups for missed classes?

No — we do not offer make-up lessons for group classes. Missed classes are not replaced or rescheduled, except in emergency situations with documentation or if there is a facility error, we will provide a makeup opportunity.

  • What is your drop or withdrawal policy?

A 30-day written notice (email to frontdesk@goldswim.com) is required to withdraw from lessons. We will prorate your final month depending on how many lessons you receive.

We do not have a pause option—as you would be withholding the spot from another interested swimmer.

  • What is the yearly registration fee?

A non-refundable annual registration fee is required per swimmer. It covers the administrative costs of signing up and the insurance of having your swimmer in the water with us.

  • What payment methods do you accept?

We accept Visa, MasterCard, and American Express for all payments.

    We do not accept checks.

  • How is billing handled?

When currently enrolled, Lessons are billed monthly on the first of the month an ongoing basis during our year around season (beginning of August through the Friday before Memorial Day).

During the summer, it is charged on the first day of the session if you were enrolled in the previous session or year-around when you signed up.

Your enrollment continues automatically unless a written drop notice is received or until the end of the session/ Year around season.

  • Why do I need to pay my first month (or session) and registration fee when I sign up?

When you first enroll, we collect your first month (or session) tuition along with the annual registration fee to officially reserve your swimmer’s spot and confirm your start date.
Because class sizes are limited, this upfront payment ensures your space is held, your instructor is assigned, and your swimmer’s lessons are guaranteed to begin on schedule.

Your ongoing monthly tuition will then be billed automatically on your regular billing cycle.

  • Why does Gold Swim School only book year-round lessons one month in advance?

Our Year-Round Lesson Program runs continuously, and we schedule lessons month-to-month to keep things flexible for families and instructors alike.

By booking one month at a time, we’re able to:

Keep class rosters accurate as swimmers progress or change levels

Adjust for holidays, pool maintenance, and special events

Offer more openings for new swimmers to join throughout the year

This system helps us maintain the personal attention, consistency, and quality that make Gold Swim School lessons so effective — while ensuring every swimmer stays on track in their swim journey.

  • Why can summer sessions be booked a couple of months in advance, and why do current year-round families get first access?

Summer is our busiest season, and spots fill quickly for Camp Splash and summer swim lesson sessions. To make planning easier for families:

We allow summer sessions to be booked a few months in advance so parents can secure spots before availability runs out.

Current Year-Round families receive early access as a thank-you for their ongoing enrollment and to ensure their swimmers can continue seamlessly into summer programs.

This approach balances fairness with convenience, giving our loyal families first choice while still offering openings to new families once early access ends.

Safety, Facility & Parent Roles

  • How do you ensure safety at the pool?

We maintain certified Site Supervisors, trained instructors, and strict safety ratios. Parents are encouraged to watch lessons from designated areas to allow instructors to focus on swimmers.

  • What are the pool rules for families?

    No running on deck

No food or drinks near the pool

Parents and siblings must remain in viewing areas

Only scheduled swimmers enter the water

  • What kind of facility does Gold Swim School have?

Our indoor, heated pool ensures year-round comfort. It is family-friendly, with changing areas, comfortable seating, and safety-focused layouts.

  • Can parents participate or help during lessons?

Parents may participate only in Parent-Tot classes. For all other levels, observation only is permitted to help swimmers gain independence.

We do encourage families to practice at home, even out of the water.

  • What is Safety Week, and why is it important?

During our Year-Round season, Gold Swim School offers Safety Week programming to teach swimmers essential water safety skills in a fun, hands-on way.

When: 3 times in the fall and 3 times in the spring

What happens: Swimmers practice safe pool behavior, discuss water safety rules, and participate in exercises like jumping in the pool fully clothed over their swimsuit to call for help.

Why it’s great: These activities build confidence, reinforce life-saving skills, and allow children to experience realistic scenarios in a safe, supervised environment. It’s a fun and memorable way to help swimmers understand the importance of safety while building resilience and water awareness.

Communication & Progress Tracking

  • How can I track my swimmer’s progress?

Your instructor provides ongoing verbal updates and milestone ribbons. You can also check your child’s skills with our guest relations staff person at the desk or by speaking with the Site Supervisor.

  • How do instructors communicate progress or issues?

Instructors provide updates directly after class as Site Supervisors will take digital notes in the system. The Lesson Director can schedule a discussion if more detail is needed.
